Univers was designed by Adrian Frutiger on Swiss principles for Charles Peignot at Deberny & Peignot.

Frutiger imposed strict discipline across all elements of the series, from light to dark, extra condensed to extended, a concordance of design that was possible in the foundry type and photocomposition fonts. Any version may be mixed within a word with any other.

It may be argued that the design of the most popular central series is limited by strict conformity to little used extremes. If Helvetica gives us the strongest central designs at some sacrifice in uniformity across the series, Univers gives us a uniform series by disciplining the central designs.

Originally released in 2009, Graphik has quickly become a modern classic. With a rational grid composed of nine weights in eight different widths, the Graphik Collection is created for maximum flexibility in communication. Inspiration for Graphik came from designer Christian Schwartz’s enduring interest in the expressive possibilities found in ordinary sans serif typefaces.

The purposeful, elegant plainness and wide range of widths allow the Graphik collection to move effortlessly between being a central design element or playing a supporting role in editorial design, corporate branding, video and broadcast design, websites, apps, and user interfaces.

San Francisco is a neo-grotesque sans-serif typeface made by Apple Inc. It was first released to developers on November 18, 2014. It is the first new typeface designed at Apple in nearly 20 years and has been inspired by Helvetica and DIN.

The San Francisco typeface has three main variants: SF for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS; SF Compact for watchOS; and SF Mono for the Terminal, Console, and Xcode applications. Several other variants exist for internal use by Apple.

San Francisco was first introduced in watchOS only. The next year at WWDC, Apple released the watchOS font as SF Compact and at the same time introduced SF UI (generally called SF) for OS X El Capitan and iOS 9. In macOS High Sierra and iOS 11, SF UI was succeeded by SF Pro.

Aktiv Grotesk is a grotesque sans-serif typeface released through Dalton Maag in 2010. It has been described as a “Helvetica killer.” The designers of Aktiv Grotesk wanted to create something in between Helvetica and Univers by removing the quirks from Helvetica and adding a bit of warmth to Univers. Aktiv Grotesk is one of my personal favorite grotesques.

It was designed as an intentional alternative to the most ubiquitous typeface from the grotesque genre – a typeface which Bruno Maag, founder of Dalton Maag, openly despises as the ‘vanilla ice cream’ of a designer’s type library.

Supria Sans is a grotesque sans-serif typeface designed by Hannes von Döhren and released through HVD Fonts in 2011. This typeface isn’t encountered nearly as much as Döhren’s other works such as Brandon Grotesque, which is surprising because this type of quirky grotesque seems to be in favor with designers at the moment.

Supria Sans is fairly unique in that it contains true italics in addition to the sloped, oblique variety normally found in grotesques.

LFT Etica, the-moralist-typefamily-project, was born at the end of 2000, but its development is ongoing, overcoming many hurdles and diversions. The starting point for the designers at Leftloft were the common “cold” grotesk sans serifs, ubiquitous and often badly applied in their everyday visual environment. The challenge was to obtain the same force, versatility and color, but with a much warmer feel. The resulting design has soft strokes, open counters and terminals; aesthetically resting somewhere between a grotesque and humanist sans serif. It successfully combines masculine force with female delicacy.

LFT Etica’s wide range of styles, together with a large character set and OpenType features, such as 4 sets of numerals, fractions, several stylistic alternates and a set of arrows and dingbats, allows for a vast variety of applications, be they editorial or corporate.
